What Are GApps?
So let’s first start with the Big question. “What Are GApps?” Well, to put it simply Google Apps also known as (GApps) or (G-Apps) are the basic Google apps such as the and It usually includes Play Store, Gmail, Google Calendar, and more. that come preinstalled with all stock android ROMs. They provide all the necessary functionality needed for Major Google Services such as Google App, Google Play Store, Etc to work.
Why There Are No GApps In Custom ROMs?
Usually, Most Custom ROMs doesn’t include GApps because Google imposes restrictions on Custom ROM makers like CyanogenMod and other custom ROM makers to not include the Google apps in their ROMs. Google provides these apps in a bundle by themselves. That’s why devs don’t include GApps in their ROMs rather asks users to flash them separately.
Why Should I Flash GApps?
Reason 1: Usually, The most common reason to flash GApps is to use the Google Services on your device. Because if you don’t flash any GApps on your phone. Most of the important Google Apps such as the Playstore won’t work on your device along with other Google Apps Which will make side-loading apps from sites like Apptoid, 9apps, your only option.
Reason 2: Apart from adding necessary Google functionalities, Flashing some moderately sized GApps can also bring additional Google features such as the Google Screen Search to your device which otherwise can’t be found on the Playstore.
These are the most common reasons one should flash GApps on their phone. If you want to learn more about more reasons then I suggest you check out this Quora Thread
How To Choose The Right GApps?
Choosing the right GApps to flash is an easy task to do. All you need to know is:
- Android Version Of The ROM You’re Flashing. (I.e – Android Nougat, Marshmallow Etc.)
- Your Processor Architecture. (I.e – ARM, ARM64, x86, x86_64)
How To Find Out The Android Version Of Your Custom ROM
Knowing the Android version of the ROM that you’re gonna flash is easy. Just go to the website/post that you’re downloading the ROM from & check in the Heading or in the description of the Android version of the ROM.
How To Find Out Your Processor’s Architecture. (Method One)
To find out what’s your processor’s architecture. Open the Settings > Apps > Google.
The letters that are written after the app version of your Google app is your processor architecture. You can download GApps For that architecture.
If you don’t have your phone doesn’t have the Google app installed or you can’t use your phone right now, You can find your processor’s architecture by this second method. Pull out Google & search for “Your-phone-name” and “Specs”. I.e if your phone is a Samsung Galaxy S8 search for:
Now in the search result, look for sites like “GSM-Arena” or any other smartphone specs comparing website.
From the specs that you see on the website. Search for your Chipset model. (usually under Platform Specs). When you find it, simply copy the name of your chipset (I.e in our case “Qualcomm Snapdragon 835” & Google it.
How To Download GApps?
After you’ve figured out your processor architecture. You can Download the Right GApps for your phone via two methods.
This is a simpler one, Most of the time When a developer posts a ROM for a phone on a website or on a form. Most of the time, if they own the phone themselves, they post the links of the right GApps (or at least their names) along with the ROM Download links. Like this for example,
So if you aren’t sure where you should download GApps from, this is where I would probably do.
If you can’t find any links for the GApps in the official ROM thread then you can download them manually from sites like “OpenGApps“. Just remember to download the GApps meant specifically for your processor architecture.
- Download the GApps as shown above.
- Next, paste the Gapps file that you have downloaded to your Sd card. ex- Storage/Sdcard/HERE.
- Make a backup of your “Current Apps” If you have installed any important ones.
How To Flash GApps?
The process of Flashing GApps is the same as flashing a custom ROM. There’s no difference, In fact, it is recommended to flash GApps along with your ROM for the best effect as flashing GApps after one or two boots may cause system instability. So use this guide for reference.
1: So after completing the Preparation. Reboot into Recovery mode by turning off your phone and then when it’s off Hold the power button and Volume+ together until you get into recovery mode (If you own a Samsung device then Hold power button, Volume+, and home button together)
2: After booting into the Recovery mode Navigate Using these (NOTE – these are the basic navigation controls and can be different for your Recovery)
- Volume (+) = Select.(Or the home button if you are using a Samsung device.)
- Volume (-) = Down.
- Power Button = Back.
These controls are standard for most recovery however if you have a Clock Work Mode recovery 5.x or above then maybe the controls will be different. And if you have a touch Recovery like (TWRP) then you can simply navigate through touch. For our current tutorial, I’m going to use TWRP 18.104.22.168
3: So after you boot into recovery mode, You’ll be on the homepage which looks like this.
4: Select “Install” and you’ll see a file explorer like this.
5: Use the file manager to browse through & select your GApps.zip file.
- Example – “Storage / External_SDCard / GApps.zip“
6: After you select the file. Swipe the bar on the bottom of the screen to flash it.
Well Done, Joe!
After that’s done you can reboot. Congrats you have just now successfully installed your Gapps After the reboot you’ll see your Gapps in the App tray.
